Tip: Exchange Server for E-mail Notifications

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

In most Windows-based networks Exchange Server is the mail server of choice.  Tembria Server Monitor fully supports all versions of Exchange for e-mail notifications but there are a few things to keep in mind when using it.

We use industry-standard SMTP to deliver e-mail notifications and Exchange Server supports SMTP of course.  To configure Tembria Server Monitor to use Exchange, go to the “Notification Settings” option found in the “Settings and Preferences” section of the tree.

For the server name, enter the network name of your Exchange Server (e.g. “exchsrvr” or “exchange.mydomain.com”).  For your first test, leave the username and password blank.  Many Exchange servers are set to trust incoming connections on the local network and will actually reject attempts to connect with credentials.

If you get an error message while delivering e-mail notifications, try again but this time specify a valid username and password.

If the error message you get includes some text indicating that “relaying is denied” then make sure that the “From” field in Tembria Server Monitor is set to the name of valid mailbox on the server.  Some servers will refuse to send messages that look like they are from another domain.

If the notifications still aren’t going through, turn on the option to enable logging to “email.log”.  Run a test and then look for the file called “email.log” in the “C:\Program Files\Tembria\Server Monitor” folder.  Open it up and look for clues or just send it to us at support@tembria.com so we can take a look at it and offer advice.
