shared folders event monitor
Description
The Shared Folders event monitor lets you watch for folders that have been shared on remote machines, possibly without adequately secure permissions.

Usage Tips
The event monitor will check the selected network device(s) for shared folders. The Warn If section provides a variety of conditions that can be checked. A special feature is the ability to check for hidden shares, if desired. Any share whose name ends in a dollar sign ($) is hidden from users who browse to the machine using the Network Neighbourhood. The share can still be accessed by specifying its full UNC name (e.g. \\computer\hiddenshare$), assuming that the user has permissions to access the share.

Shares are often created by users in order to do one-time transfers of files across the network. Unfortunately it is all too easy to forget about a share and leave it open to network access over a long period of time. Sometimes this can lead to security risks or make sensitive data available to other network users who would not normally have access to that information.

Using the Shared Folders event monitor you can keep track of the folders being shared and inform users if they have shared information in a way that violates network administration policy.

Important: Be sure to specify the credentials to use when connecting to the remote machine. By default the Tembria Network Monitor service runs in the Local System account and may not be able to access the remote machines unless credentials are specified.
