Event Monitor Schedule Settings
You have complete control over how often each event monitor runs. Tembria Server Monitor
offers a number of ways to control the monitoring schedule including base times and filters
by time and day. These options are explained below.
Schedule and Base Time
The "Run Every" line allows you to specify how often the event monitor will run. Event monitors
can be set to run as fast as once per second or as long as once per year. The optimal frequency
will depend on your monitoring configuration and the objectives you have. In general it is best
to use the longest reasonable schedule. For example, you might have your ping response time
checks running fairly frequently, perhaps once every couple of minutes but you might set your
drive space checks to run once per hour.
The "Base Time" field determines at what time the event monitor will run. For example, if your
event monitor is set to run every 10 minutes and the base time is set to 12:01am then the
event monitor will run at 12:01am, 12:11am, 12:21am, etc.
Advanced Schedule Options
Selecting the "Show Advanced Schedule Options" link shows a set of items that give you
more control over event monitor scheduling. The first option tells the event monitor
to try again if it fails. With this option selected, if the event monitor fails then
it will run again right away. If the second check fails too then an error event
will be generated. If the second check succeeds then the results of the first check
will be ignored and a success event will be generated. If you're getting spurious
errors that you want to ignore, enabling this option can often reduce the number
of false negative reports that you receive.
By default, when an event monitor enters an error state it runs on the same schedule
as usual. Tembria Server Monitor allows you to choose a different schedule for the
error state. For example, you could set the event monitor to run every ten minutes
but then switch to running every minute when it enters an error state.
Tembria Server Monitor also includes filters that allow you to select which days
of the week and hours of the day the event monitor will run. It's a great way
to pause monitoring operations while system backups are running or scheduled maintenance
is under way.
