ping event monitor
Description
The ping event monitor is one of the most important event monitors for monitoring the status of network devices. It can use standard ICMP pings to check the accessibility of the network devices that you are responsible for managing.

Due to the nature of the protocol, some ping messages can be lost during transmission. The ping event monitor lets you specify how many pings you wish to run when the event monitor is activated. The ping event monitor can then warn you if the average or maximum response time exceeds a defined threshold. In order to not unnecessarily raise a warning if a just one ping in the set fails, you can select to ignore single ping failures.

If you select the option to keep a history of ping values, you can find the data files

Usage Tips
For workstations and servers that offer services which are critical to your organizations operations, it is recommended that you configure a ping event monitor to watch each of them.

To monitor machines that are outside of your local network, it is recommended that you set notification thresholds higher than for local machines. Machines which are very close in terms of network topology to the machine running Tembria network monitor can usually be expected to have ping response times of less than 20 milliseconds. For machines which are out on the Internet figures of 50 to 150 milliseconds are not uncommon and sometimes higher. You can use the Quick Ping window in Tembria Server Monitor to measure the typical response times for specific machines.
