voice notification configuration tips
Important: Getting voice notifications to work can be a bit tricky. This page gives a number of tips and suggestions but if you're having troubles don't hesitate to contact us. We have experience working with a variety of voice modems in many different environments and can save you a lot of time.

The first thing to check is that the appropriate driver for the modem is installed. Some voice modems will work fine as modems with the generic Windows driver but will not offer voice functionality until the device-specific driver is installed.

To check this, go to the Device Manager (on XP: right click on My Computer, choose Properties, select the Hardware tab and select the Device Manager button).

In the Modems section, if the modem is listed under its full name then the driver is installed. If not, install the driver from the CD that came with the modem.

Next, make sure there is a sound card installed in the machine and that it has its appropriate drivers installed. Oddly enough, voice modems require an installed sound card to perform their job.

Next, make sure you select the "tada.wav" file that is found in the Sounds folder under the Tembria installation directory. Sound files have to be mono and 8-bit sampled. We can convert any sound file that you have to the appropriate format.

If you are connecting to the machine running Tembria Server Monitor using Microsoft's Remote Desktop software, make sure to select the "Leave at remote computer" option in the sound section of the Local Resources tab before you connect. Otherwise Remote Desktop will be intercepting sound calls and this causes the voice modem to fail to detect the sound card.

Lastly, try restarting the machine where the voice modem is installed. We have encountered several driver setup programs that don't ask for a system restart but require one nonetheless before the modem will be recognized.

If none of the above works let us know and we can dig a bit deeper but in our experience, one or more of the above are the usual culprits.
